Conversations
With Dan McNulty in Jersey City

Conversations is a series that was developed in 2009 as a way to connect my earnest to reach into the past with the discovery of my roots in Jersey City, through a photographer who I knew very little about, not unlike the connection I forged through photography with my father after his passing. In finding the footing and angles of a photographer that came before me, I learned through their eyes, and placed myself within a new, ever evolving narrative.

Photographer Dan McNulty was a Jersey City resident raised in his family's funeral home. He photographed for two decades throughout the 1950s as a hobby The city experienced many changes within that time both infrastructurally and governmentally.  I chose to pick up the baton and carry this body of images forward through a similar time period for the city, and in doing so, had a conversation with McNulty himself.
